What You Don’t Know Can’t Hurt You!

At least when it come to wine.

Despite the never-ending judgements of wine snobs, you don’t have to become an expert on wine. You can just… like… like it.

You don’t need to know how a television works to enjoy watching it. You don’t need to understand how a transmission works to love your car. And you don’t need to understand a whole lot about wine to appreciate it.

HuffPo has a list of things you can completely ignore when it comes to wine.

The Vintage

Your wine’s birthday is pretty much irrelevant. With modern winemaking technology, Mother Nature’s influence on the quality of wine is on the wane.

“Vintages aren’t so much ‘good’ or ‘bad’ as they are ‘easy’ or ‘difficult… Great farmers and winemakers will make good wine even in challenging years.”

The Rating

Wine critics get paid for their opinion, and those opinions have a lot of influence. Just remember that you’re entitled to your own opinion, even if you don’t get paid for it.

…adorning bottles, displays and magazine pages with ratings with their popular 100-point scale, like teachers grading homework assignments, doesn’t do drinkers any favors.

The Winemaker

While it can be interesting to know who’s behind the vine, it’s not knowledge that’s necessary.

“Knowing the winemaker of the wine you like is the equivalent of knowing the chef who’s making your dinner. If you’re at a diner, it matters a lot less than if you’re enjoying a 10-course tasting menu.”

The Tasting Notes

Now, there are two types of tasting notes. There are mass marketing notes which are exactly that – marketing. And then there are small-shop tasting notes from wine-loving employees who have actually tasted the wine they’re making notes on.

“Find retail stores and bartenders you trust, listen to them and try something new.”

The Sulfites

It’s common to hear of sulfite allergies when talking about wine, but the reality is there is no such thing as a wine without sulfites. What’s more, it does not matter.

If you enjoy orange juice, cured meats, dried fruit or canned soup, you are not allergic to sulfites. In fact, it’s far more likely that your headache is caused by dehydration (or that extra glass or two!) than the sulfites in your wine.

And on that note, pass the corkscrew and let’s all enjoy a glass of wine without worrying whether we don’t know what we don’t know. After all… ignorance is bliss.
