The Trick to Making Bad Wine Taste Good!

We’ve shared some tips before on how to improve the taste of a less-than-wonderful wine. Wine hacks range from putting pennies in your wine (For the love of all that is holy, please disinfect them first. Money is soooo dirty!) to sprinkling in a pinch of salt. But it turns out there’s another trick that’s all but guaranteed to make that bad wine taste better…

Change the way you describe the wine.

A recent study in the journal Food Research International found that the way you taste wine largely depends on how it was described to you. From the NY Post:

Your favorite wine is a full-bodied marketing scheme, with notes of oak and bullcrap.

That’s right. Researchers discovered that the more elaborate the description, the higher participants rated the wine.

When the labels waxed poetic about things like the drink’s history and positive qualities, the participants got far more excited about it than they did for wine with lackluster labels or in a blind taste test.

The descriptions with the best results went beyond mentioning the notes of fruit or the hint of oak, and included descriptions of the history of the vineyards and even the physical beauty of the wineries themselves.

And it’s not just that study participants rated the fancy-sounding wines higher… they were willing to pay more money for the wine with the flowery description! Perhaps most interestingly, researchers further found an association between positive emotions and the more elaborately described wines.

The results showed that presentation of wine descriptions (based solely on objectively defined, sensory information) to consumers when they tasted and evaluated wine, significantly increased their wine liking, willingness to pay for the wine, and elicited more intense positive and less intense negative emotions compared to blind tasting.

Don’t worry. We’re not going to put a picture of our admittedly lovely grounds on that wine-in-a-can stuff and try to pass it off on you. We just thought it was interesting!
