Red Wine: Good For Your Heart, Good For Your Soul
Not many people need convincing when it comes to drinking wine. Most of the time, it’s too delicious to pass up! Not only can it enhance any situation, meal, or mood, it also has pretty impressive health benefits! Need we say more?
Red wine. It looks good, it tastes good, and it’s heart healthy! If the Mayo Clinic says it, it must be true! According to them, red wine contains a polyphenol called resveratrol, which is known to help prevent damage to blood vessels. It also reduces LDL, which is “bad” cholesterol, and prevents blood clots. It doesn’t just reduce LDL, the alcohol and antioxidants INCREASE good cholesterol (HDL)!
How is the resveratrol made? It actually comes from the skin of the grapes used to make red wine. Grapes used in white wine have it too, but red wine is fermented longer so it contains more of it. On the rare occasion that you might not be in the mood for a glass of the good stuff, grape juice has the same resveratrol levels and could be just as effective!
Aside from the resveratrol, studies have shown that alcohol in general has had positive effects on the heart. It’s known to reduce the formation of blood clots, raises good cholesterol and lowers the bad, and produces changes in blood pressure. All of these are key in promoting good heart health.
Of course, like with anything else, moderation is key! The idea is to either drink in moderation or not at all. However, if a glass or two of red wine has any chance of being beneficial to our health, consider us drinking! There’s no rules against having some vino with our Cheerios.
