Hot Chocolate & Wine!
Baby, It’s COLD Outside! Warm Up With WINE!
The first icy blast of the season is upon us. (Only took until January… At the rate this winter has been going, we almost expected “Ugly Bathing Suit” parties at Christmas, instead of all those old ugly sweaters!) It finally feels like winter!
But let’s face it. Cold weather can be physically and mentally draining, sending folks running through their errands as fast as possible to get back home where it’s warm and cozy… and where there’s wine. When you think of winter and wine, you probably think of the old classic, mulled wine. Spicy, delicious, and just the thing to thaw body and spirit. But what about an even older classic? HOT CHOCOLATE! Who doesn’t remember coming in on a frosty day, red-cheeked and numb-fingered, to a nice big mug of hot chocolate? It’s one of our best childhood winter memories!
And now, it can be one of our best adult winter memories, We found a wonderful recipe, courtesy of SAVEUR, that will let you turn that old favorite into a new winter treat:
- 6 oz. bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
- 1⁄3 cup fruity red wine
- 1 cup milk
- 1 pinch kosher salt
- Sugar, for serving
Bring chocolate and wine to a simmer in a 1-qt. saucepan over low heat; cook, whisking, until melted, about 3 minutes. Add 2⁄3 cup water, milk, and salt; bring to a boil, and cook, while whisking 3 minutes more. Pour into 2 mugs and serve with sugar on the side, if you like.
Did we mention it serves two? Perfect for snuggling in front of the fire while the snow and wind blow outside! And we have numerous reds that would add just the right fruity touch, right here! Try it yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments! (Oh… and let us know whether you tried it with marshmallows or whipped cream on top. We’re pretty curious about that ourselves!)
