Does Your Wine Go To Waist?

Laurita Winery , Wine Science 🕔September 30, 2017 0 comments

The debate has long waged over wine and weight and growing waistlines, and the articles and different opinions on it are enough to make your head spin before you’ve drunk a drop!

So does your wine go to your waist? And should you modify your drinking habits? We have answers from experts.

For years, Wine Spectator has looked into the science behind wine and weight to better understand how to maintain a healthy lifestyle without giving up your favorite beverage.

Count Your Calories

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), an average 5-ounce glass of dry table wine between 11 and 14 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) will contain 120 to 130 calories.

Now bear in mind, that’s an average — and with a wide range. Since there are seven calories in one gram of alcohol, the ABV can make a big difference.

Count Your Carbs

Yes, we know carbs are also calories. They’re a special, horrible kind of calorie than can be converted straight to fat, which has a lot of people counting them. But wine can work in a healthy lifestyle.

A good rule of thumb: The sweeter the wine, the higher its carb count will likely be; dry reds and whites, plus sparklers, are often great low-carb options.

Count Your Corks

If you’ve tracked your other carbs and calories, you’ll be able to determine how many glasses of wine you can have.

“You just have to figure out how it can work within your diet, and also maybe make sacrifices in other places. [For example], having a glass of wine may be more important than having dessert.”
