There’s a lot to learn about wine. For such a simple joy, it can be an extremely complicated subject, and experts do hands-on study for years to become truly knowledgeable.

What if there was a shortcut? What if you just enjoy wine and want to learn… well… enough, but not everything? What if you could become an “expert” in an hour? According to Alain Merheje’s book, How to Become a Wine Connoisseur in 60 Minutes or Less, you can.

Forbes calls the book “a concise yet solid guide, approachable and uncomplicated and in no way shallow” , and shares some interesting facts included by Merheje.

  • Bouquet is the ‘total sum of the impressions left by wine inside your nose.’ ‘Flavor’ is bouquet and taste combined.
  • China is one of the top 10 wine producing nations in world, and the “most notable native grape variety used in winemaking in China is the red Vitis Quinquangularis Rehd.”
  • If you must store red and white wines at the same temperature, the ideal temperature is 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius).

Merheje presents facts not as bullet points or graphs, but through lucid and logical prose. The book is a quick read peppered with sidebars that add personality.

We have to admit, we’re really interested in the book. We’re always happy to learn more about our favorite topic, and we can kind of relate to a guy who feels the same way about rules that we do.

“Finally, all rules are meant to be broken. There are people, such as my wife, who drink mostly red wine whatever the food, others only white, others still only beer. As for me, I sweeten my tea in any manner I please.”

So if you’ve got an hour, and the interest, maybe you really can become a wine expert!
